Madison School District Student Achievements

WKCE (Wisconsin Knowledge and Concept Examinations) Test Scores

The WKCE measures achievement in reading, language, mathematics, science, and social studies using multiple-choice and short-answer questions. We are providing 10th grade results for the last school year (8th grade scores will be posted soon). The tests were taken by students during October 2007. Students who scored "advanced" (highest score) demonstrate in-depth understanding of academic knowledge and skills tested on WKCE for that grade level. Students scoring "proficient" (above "basic" and "minimal") demonstrate competency in the academic knowledge and skills tested on WKCE for that grade level. Because economic status is a significant predictor of academic success, we included both the "proficient" and "advanced" scores for students eligible for Free &/or Reduced Lunch as one indicator of the level of academic achievement among these students. Districts throughout the state and nation are grappling with the challenge to improve achievement for students in poverty. No district, anywhere, has been successful in doing so over a significant time period. The scores for all of Madison’s students (noneconomically disadvantaged plus economically disadvantaged) are the ones that the media frequently presents; because Madison has a much higher percentage of students in poverty, the overall scores do not compare as well with the surrounding districts.
